The risks are numerous and oral piercings can be very damaging to your teeth and gums:

When the mouth is pierced, especially the tongue, the bacteria that is exposed in the mouth can lead to nasty infections. Long stem barbells, studs, and lip rings can chip or break teeth, wear away at enamel and even lead to root canals and extractions. When oral piercings constantly come into contact with the gum line, recession of the gums is often an issue.

Oltjen Orthodontics would like patients to consider the long term problems that can arise from these piercings. It is our job to inform and make recommendations for long term dental care. We seriously suggest you think twice before considering an oral piercing, and if you have them already, to remove them to prevent further damage.
